Founded in 1939, the Empire
State Speech and Hearing Clinic, Inc. is a non-profit special education
summer school operated as a New
York State
Lions Club Project.
Located on 420 acres of
beautiful woodlands with a man-made lake, the facility provides a living and
learning experience uninhibited by traditional school buildings and
classrooms.
Camp Badger is centrally
located in upstate New York, convenient to Ithaca, Binghamton, Elmira, and Syracuse. Students who
attend come from school districts throughout the state. Out-of-state students
are also welcome to attend.
Children reside in rustic
cabins which house 6 to 10 students and are equipped with electricity. Modern
bathroom and shower facilities are located near the cabin areas. Four
counselors/teacher aides are assigned to each cabin to share the
responsibility of 24-hour supervision.
Lions Camp Badger
is the only residential Lions affiliated summer camp in the country to offer
an academic program under the auspices of a state education department. Our
academic team consists of certified teachers from various backgrounds which
include elementary education, special education, and speech pathology. Before
camp starts, our school staff spends a significant amount of time looking
over each camper’s Individualized Education Program (IEP). It is during this
time that specific goals and objectives are created for each child. At the
end of camp, each camper will have a progress summary explaining his/her
academic growth and addressing other areas of concern. This summary is carefully
created using the input of all of our academic staff and teacher assistants.
All New
York State Lions
Clubs are encouraged to become familiar with Camp Badger
and financially support the Camp. Annual
wish lists, programs and photos are available on their website Lions Camp Badger
