SCHOOL IN A BOX

POWER POINT PRESENTATION

Lion Clubs International in cooperation with UNICEF has been supporting the School-in-a-Box program since 1996.  The purpose is to provide school supplies to refugee camps and in geographic areas devastated by natural disasters so that displaced children can continue to gain access to educational services and regain some normalization in their young lives.  The goal is to ensure the continuation of a child’s education in the first 72 hours of an emergency.  Over the past decade thousands of Box’s have been provided to teachers in areas affected by civil unrest, war, earthquakes, hurricanes, and tsunamis.  In 2005 over 112,500 boxes were distributes enabling 9,000,000 children to continue or start their educational process.  This includes 1,755 sent to areas within the United States hit by Katrina.

Each UNICEF School-in-a-Box includes teacher supplies and materials for up to 40 students. each.  The contents of the Box are not culturally specific and require a local teacher or an educated individual.  Components can be adapted so that they can be utilized anywhere in the world.  Exercise books for example are printed without margins, so that children who write left to right or right to left can utilize them.

The cost of a single “BOX” is $206.00.  Our goal is one box per year.  Please consider helping the children by sending your own donation to LCIF, 300 W 22nd Street, Oak Brook, Illinois 60523-8842.  Remember to include your Club Name, Club Number and our District Number MD20-R1.
